Qanat is the 3rd album of Iranian kamancheh virtuoso Misagh Joolaee and again nominated for the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik .The Word Qanat refers to ancient structures used to extract fresh water from underground springs in desert areas of Iran. It was dug into the desert soil until water was encountered. The surrounding desert villages were then supplied with water.
This motif has been taken as a model to try to get fresh impressions out of the soil of the musical tradition.
In the present album the traces of this constant search are even more evident than in previous works. There is more profound experimentation with odd rhythms, new plucking and bowing techniques, ornamentation, and modulation possibilities between modes. In addition, there are clearly more improvisational moments between the firmly composed passages, creating a more immediate as well as free form of expression. Also in this album, all the works were recorded with one kamancheh, without added tracks and sound effects, in order to convey an unadulterated sound impression, as if from a concert. Furthermore, the time signature of each piece remains unchanged.
